Mark Zuckerberg appears to finally admit Facebook is a media company
Summary:
Growing concerns of fake news on the social network see CEO relent on protest that Facebook is not a media company
In a video chat Zuckerberg said "Growing concerns of fake news on the social network see CEO relent on protest that Facebook is not a media company"
The news comes about as many commentors have stated facebook as being a media company as they "disseminating news and exercising editorial judgement" but Zuckerberg, in the past, has called the company a technology company.
But facebooks influence has come into light due to the recent fake news scandal. Previously facebook has a team of around 30 of editors to 'curate' the trending news feed but were cut in August due to complaints of being rightwinged news censorship and replaced with algorithms. but this managed to "amplifying false reporting to an audience of 1.79 billion monthly users. " instead.
Key stats/facts:
- "we do a lot more than just distribute news, and we’re an important part of the public discourse.”
- Around two thirds of Americans say they get news from social media.
My opinion:
This just goes to show the sheer amount of power and influence media institutions have and how its almost a political statement to call yourself a media institution as it means you have a sort of agenda, why else was facebook shying away from being called a media company? What this makes me think is that all media companies therefore their may always be an editorial judgment bias present no matter what and that opinion and bias will influence a large wave of people.
