Weekly New/Digital Media (30)
Why is Mail Online going after the fact checkers?
Summary:"There are those in the media landscape trying to fix the fake news problem. Then there are those who are happy to play fast and loose with the truth"
"Throughout the US election, Snopes debunked articles on everything from President Barack Obama planning to issue a blanket pardon for Hillary Clinton to Pope Francis backing Donald Trump."
Snope along with othersites like the assossiated press, ABC news and other fact cheaking websites were named as third party sources facebook would use to help flag disputed stories. A week later the mail online posted a 1,400 word article about Snopes founders and relationships.
But the artciles tone seem to reveal a lot more about what the publishers thought about trying to reveal the truth about fake news.
"The purpose of the article appears to be to sow doubt about measures to deal with, or at least mitigate, the impact of fake news and falsehoods on social media, long before they have even got off the ground."
"If Facebook’s plans go ahead and Snopes helps it fact check, the Mail would expect that some of its more tenuous stories will be flagged." having a small impact on audiences.
My opinion/;
There is something appludable to what the daily mail has to say, it isn't so easy to find fake news stories as many stories can be treading a careful line between opinion and being false. However i feel as a media news organisations the daily mail should be slightly more supportive and instead aim to help and develop the tools needed to find and challenge fake news stories as i think the main aim of jounrlism should be to provide the audience with the truth and not just a bit a click bait to sway their politcal opinions too.
