Windows 10 users complain about intrusive new OneDrive adverts

Samsung TabPro S running Windows 10

Summary: "Microsoft tries to sell cloud service OneDrive subscriptions with new ad within Windows 10’s File Explorer, to the annoyance of customers"
Users are now complaining about the adverts for their OneDrive Cloud service directly into the files explorer. Even though users are said they can opt out of receiving the advert. This isn't the first time microsoft has done something has done this, it was also a feature of windows 7&8 and was forced to pay out compensation over automatic Windows 10 installs and even attempted to pay people to use its Edge browser instead of Google’s Chrome or Mozilla’s Firefox. Now permitting advertisement in the disguise of tips

Key statistics/ facts:

  • A Microsoft spokesperson told the Verge that users could opt out of receiving the ads. They said: “The new tips notifications within the File Explorer in Windows 10 were designed to help Windows 10 customers by providing quick, easy information to enhance the experience relative to storage and cloud file management.”
  • Reddit user MorallyDeplorable said: “The Start menu is plastered with pinned ads, it randomly injects ads into the start menu program list, it’ll pop up asking about Office 365, and it’ll whine about OneDrive when you open Explorer or accidentally click on the OneDrive link, or even if you highlight the OneDrive link with the keyboard.
  • “Some of the preinstalled apps have ads and it’ll nag you when you launch Chrome or Firefox the first time about using Edge by saying flat-out wrong ‘facts’. Sure, all of these can be turned off but they’re all on by default. It’s pretty ridiculous.”

My opinion:
I feel that this isn't at all surprising or that annoying. Most the adverts aren't usually in your face and you can easily turn of the sound of that notification. Obviously, they will find easy ways to self promote and make money, least its amoungst their own company one that i like and am happy using, if not you can easily switch to apple?
