January assessment: Learner response
Complete the following tasks on your blog as your learner response:
1) Type up your feedback in full (you do not need to write mark/grade if you do not wish to).
WWW- a sophisticated, balanced and very comprehensive answer
EBI- would benefit from specific data about the decline of newspapers/gratification etc. and more explicit points about the loss of advertising revenue due to google, etc. work on a paragraph involving this
2) Read through the mark scheme (go to the last two pages of the document - Section B New/digital media). Of the six different statements for each level (e.g. A sophisticated and comprehensive essay, showing very good critical autonomy.) write which level you think YOU are currently working at for each one. Explain WHY and, for any that are not Level 4, what you are going to do to improve in that area.
A sophisticated and comprehensive essay, showing very good critical autonomy: i feel i am working at a LEVEL 4 but i could improve by increasing the clarity of each paragraph.
Sophisticated and detailed understanding of new and digital media: I think i am on a LEVEL 3 as i could probably use more terminology to show a deeper understanding especially focusing on News a lot more.
A sharp focus on the question throughout: I think this is a LEVEL 4 due to my use of clear topic sentences and links at the end.
Sophisticated application of a wide range of media debates, issues and theories and wider contexts : LEVEL 3 i could use key terminology more with more references to current debates and issues especially on the news context.
A comprehensive individual case study, with a wide range of detailed examples: LEVEL 3 as i could involve more case studies and examples in more depth
Well structured, articulate and engaged: LEVEL 4
3) Look at the Examiners' Report for this particular paper. Read page 10 - Section B New/digital media. How many of the good points or higher level answer examples did you include in your essay? What were they? What could you have added to improve your mark?

4) Read through these exemplar A grade essays from last year. What do these essays offer that yours does not? Identify THREE things you can take from these essays to improve your own responses in future.

5) Write ONE new paragraph for your January assessment essay. Ideally, this should be a section you did not cover in your original essay. This paragraph needs to be comprehensive and meet the criteria for Level 4 of the mark scheme.
Feedback in regards to essay needed:

Question 6
The internet is a democratic space, where we are all free to participate equally.
Using your own case study, discuss whether the impact of new and digital media is
democratic.
The rise of the internet has explicitly meant that traditional democratic media platforms have come to a decline thus suggesting that the rise of NDM has ultimately made things less democratic than ever before. One area that has been vigorously hit is the print platform of Newspapers. Many newspapers such as the independent have been experiencing a vast decline in revenue leading to a non-profitable business where many are therefore being forced to close down. For example, the independent before its withdrawal from the platform had not only experienced decreased circulation due to the availability of news stories on the internet but also a vast decrease in its advertising revenue. This is the case for many newspaper organisations and is the primary reason for them shutting down - they simply aren't earning enough to keep their business running. This decrease in advertising revenue has mainly come about due to a lot of the revenue being taken away by NDM conglomerates such as Google, who make millions through their adverting. They manage to gain much of the advertising revenue because they have a higher audience reach than newspapers esepically in the time in with cirulation is decreasing, therefore the overall price of advertising decreases due to the increased supply and this value of advertising can no longer keep newspapers afloot. This therefore ultimately leads to the demise of newspaper journalists and investigative journalism which only news papers provided. This therefore decreases the audience pleasure of 'accurate' surveillance. Therefore the rise of NDM has lead to the decrease in democracy due to the negative impact it has on democratic sources, such as newspapers, revenue.
Incorporate obvious NDM weekly story examples in a separate LR paragraph.
The development of NDM has also meant that is is easier for audiences to share content which can have both positive and negative consequences. The ease of sharing content can be seen as also having some very negative consequences. As andrew keens said, "the internet is like thousands of monkeys typing nonsense" which seems to be more true than ever with the lack of validity in what people post or their sheer obsession with attention that they forget they are not doing/ saying anything of value which is as far from being democratic as they could get. Despite a lot of the NDM being used for citizen journalism, it isn't always the case. There are many negative news stories such as an 18 year old mother who tapped her 2 year old son to the wall (39) which isn't positive nor democratic. This obviously isn't the other case with many others for example facebooks fake news scandles(
Moreover the companies behind them may just have a bit too much power to let positive citizen journalism to come through. "70 social and racial justice organizations" seem to find that Facebook is censoring black lives matter movements but not others(story 40) which highlights the sheer amount of power of the company. The platform is almost using their 'opinion leader' status as a company to drip-feed ideologies into the unsuspecting audience which reinforces the idea that the internet is almost a echo chamber and the echos only seem to be coming from the multinational opinion leaders - the typical Marxist individuals in power. Therefore, NDM almost is a simulacra of reality and only present audiences with what it wishes through selective censorship thus decreasing is democratic nature. bringing forth the idea that democracy still needs unbiased gatekeepers and maybe this compete freedom of speech etc. movement is slowly being abused as NDM keeps on developing. This political stance of many of the mulitnational organisations is very obvious when much of them move into politcs such as trump going from business to politics of mark zuegbergue doing the same (33) going far as to say he is no longer atheaist so he could run in the elections. There is obviously a political stance of much of these organisations which isn't anywhere near democratic.
Finish for homework if you don't complete it in the lesson. Due:Monday.

Did include:
- audience participation through comments, citizen journalism etc.
- reference to multinational media organisations
Didn't include:
- wider aspect of democracy not just news - could have given more examples in regards to freedom of speech etc.
- changing role of audience and producers - could have included example of how audiences are potentially in more control now.
- equal participation of democracy - could have elaborated on the digital divide, opinion leader aspects etc.
- Future issues and debates above Marxism and pluralism and active/passive audiences.
4) Read through these exemplar A grade essays from last year. What do these essays offer that yours does not? Identify THREE things you can take from these essays to improve your own responses in future.
What they offer that i didn't:
- fluent use of media terminology
- higher level media concepts such as global village etc.
- theorists names
- flowing paragraphs from one to another
- case study
- detailed (extremely) examples
- fluent use of examples
- sharp question focus
- statistics
- smaller details (still effective)
3 things i could take away
- necessity of fluent terminology
- detailed examples
- key facts and statistics
