Weekly New/Digital Media (17)
Make Google and Facebook pay for public service reporting
Summary: "Politicians urged to amend digital economy bill to ensure digital giants pay a 1% levy in order to fund investigative public interest journalism"
"The Media Reform Coalition and National Union of Journalists are hoping to make Google and Facebook fund public service reporting in Britain." Making an amendment to the digital economy bill which would propose a 1% levy on the operations of the digital giants to pay for independent/ non-profit journalism.
"Media Reform Coalition (MRC) argues that “digital intermediaries” such as Google and Facebook “are not only amassing eye-watering profits and paying minimal tax in the UK, they are also bleeding the newspaper industry dry by sucking up advertising revenue”" thus needed to prevent journalists becoming the casualties
Des Freedman says “We must continue to press for a news media that places the public interest above those of shareholder and vested interests”.
My Opinion:
This shows that there is a huge importance stressed on journalists and the impact of new and digital media, platforms like google and facebook, are in fact damaging the profession to such an extent that it is deemed as something that needs to be tackled by the law.
If this law is passed i believe it would be a very positive effect, these large institutions can afford to pay 1% and it can save investigative journalism and journalism that is too serious public internet and not minor popular mainstream news.
